Guidelines and Policies

Responsible Use

  • Review the output for accuracy and bias
  • GenAI usage consumes electricity at much higher rates than texting and email, use responsibly.
  • What if? – ask the AI to test its own results. They tend to be agreeable, so…
  • IP and privacy
  • SSO, don’t share credentials

Efficient Use

  • Generative AI is designed to generate, so expect it to be creative, sometimes too creative – Trust, but verify
  • First draft, not Final draft
  • Language versus mathematics – Multimodal
  • Prompt caching – you need to turn that on in BoodleBox, others may have that built in.
  • Prompt iteration – start with a simple prompt, don’t try to build the best prompt. Iterate, iterate, iterate.
  • Define the context and output criteria (revise this passage, versus, revise this passage from the perspective of a freshmen student from new York and provide the result in 3 paragraphs in MLA format)
  • You can also take away from the result, it doesn’t have to always be additive (make it less aggressive, make it less science-y…)
  • Give it examples
  • Give it constraints

Your Data

The GenAI providers have agreed not to use your inputs or the outputs generated, to train their AI models.  They also agree that you own all of the output, or at least that they will not assert any ownership rights in such output. A very limited number of Mercy IT administrators may have access to the backend systems storing your information, bound by the Access to Electronic Information Policy to access this information only under specific warranted circumstances with proper approvals.

GenAI providers may use attributes, classifiers and metadata (information about how you interact with a product or service, including metrics like frequency, duration, and patterns of use), for things such as monitoring for abusive conduct or to improve their products. In some cases where abuse is flagged, GenAI providers may retain prompts and conduct a review of those prompts by a human.
